Entering And Controlling The Bodies Of Others (Parkaya Pravesha)

Entering and controlling the bodies of other people is one of the different types of Spiritual Power or siddhis outlined in the Vibhuti Pada (Book III) of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. In India, this ability is called Parkaya Pravesha which means one’s soul entering into the body of some other person or animal.

It is said that someone with this knowledge can even bring a dead body back to life. I guess this explains how Jesus was able to bring Lazarus back from the dead (though we have no way of verifying if this really happened). Nevertheless, I think this kind of feat can only be performed by highly skilled yogis because it clearly transcends moral, ethical, and physical laws. So, if you are thinking of entering Brad Pitt’s body to score with the ladies, forget it. It ain’t gonna happen.

Vibhuti Pada: Sutra 39
“Bandha-karana-saithilyat pracara-samvedanac ca cittasya para-sariravesah”

Translations:

"The mind can enter another's body on relaxation of the cause of bondage and from knowledge of passages."
— I.K. Taimni, The Science Of Yoga

"By relaxing one’s attachment to the body, and becoming profoundly sensitive to its currents, consciousness can enter another’s body."
— Chip Hartranft, The Yoga-Sûtra of Patañjali

"Through the weakening of the causes of bondage, and by learning the method of sassing, the consciousness is transferred to the other body."
— Charles Johnston, The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali: The Book of the Spiritual Man

Attaining The Ability To Enter & Control The Bodies Of Others

The ability to enter and control the bodies of others can be attained by performing Samyama Meditation on the Third Eye Chakra.

According to the Sat-Cakra-Nirupana (Description of the six centers) which is the sixth chapter of Sri-Tattva-Cintamani, a metrical work in 26 chapters that was composed in 1577 by an Indian scholar named Purnananda Swami:

“The excellent Sadhaka (practitioner), whose Atma (Self) is nothing but a meditation on this Lotus (Ajna Chakra), is able quickly to enter another's body at will, and becomes the most excellent among Munis (Sages), and all-knowing and all-seeing...”

Additionally, to be able to acquire this skill, Patanjali mentions two conditions: relaxation of the cause of bondage and knowledge of passages. We can understand this better by looking at the concepts behind these conditions:

1. Klesas - The first is “relaxation of the cause of bondage.” The “cause of bondage” referred to in this sutra are the roots of our attachment to life in the physical world which are called Klesas or Kleshas. When the Klesas are loosened, consciousness gains the freedom to move up and down the different planes of existence. You can look up both the Hindu Klesa and the Buddhist Klesa to get a better understanding of this concept.

2. Citta-Vaha-Nadi – The second is “knowledge of passages.” The passages being referred to here is called Citta-Vaha-Nadi. Nadis or “channels” are the passageway for the energies of the subtle body. Citta here means “mind.” We can then presume that the subtle essence of the mind flows in the body the same way Prana and nerve impulses do.
