Clairvoyance: Knowledge of Subtle, Hidden, & Remote Things

Clairvoyance or the knowledge of subtle, hidden, and remote things is one of the different types of Spiritual Power or siddhis outlined in the Vibhuti Pada (Book III) of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. It is the power or faculty of discerning objects not present to the senses.

The great sages who mastered the science of Yoga taught that there are several realms of progressively increasing subtlety interpenetrating the physical plane. We just cannot see them because our eyes can only tune in to signals we receive here in the physical world. However, Patanjali states in his sutra that you can tune in to the signals of the superphysical worlds through meditation. The method is given in Sutra 26 of the Vibhuti Pada.

Vibhuti Pada: Sutra 26
“Pravrtty-aloka-nyasat suksma-vyavahita-viprakrsta-jnanam”

Translations:

"Knowledge of the small, the hidden or the distant by directing the light of superphysical faculty."
— I.K. Taimni, The Science Of Yoga

"Being absorbed in the play of the mind’s luminosity yields insight about the subtle, hidden, and distant."
— Chip Hartranft, The Yoga-Sûtra of Patañjali

"By bending upon them the awakened inner light, there comes a knowledge of things subtle, or concealed, or obscure."
— Charles Johnston, The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali: The Book of the Spiritual Man

Attainment of Clairvoyance

According to this sutra, clairvoyance or the knowledge of subtle, hidden, and remote things can be attained by performing Samyama Meditation on the Solar Plexus Chakra or the Third Eye Chakra.

The Solar Plexus Chakra, also called Manipura (city of jewels), is the energy centre in the spinal column located behind the navel - corresponding to the solar plexus. In some tantric traditions, the first and second chakras are believed to belong to the higher realms of animal life, whereas the Solar Plexus Chakra (3rd) up to the Crown (7th) belong to man. It is said that the spiritual realms only begin to appear when one has awakened the energy of the Solar Plexus Chakra.

Bhutas, Indriyas, and Tanmatras

The corresponding sense-organ (Indriya) of the Solar Plexus Chakra is the eye and the subtle primary experience (Tanmatra) is sight.

To better understand this chart, by the way, kindy read my article on mastery of the five senses.

It is said that only a clairvoyant, one who can use the inner organs of perception, can grasp what is there in the realms beyond the physical world. Things such as the distant past, the future, the astral plane, and so many other such places can only be clearly seen, not by the eye, but by the inner eye. Clairvoyance involves the mastery of your inner sense of sight or vision. Hence, performing samyama meditation on the third eye chakra also enables one to attain knowledge of subtle, hidden, and remote things.
