Clairaudience or the knowledge of the sounds/language of all beings is one of the different types of spiritual power or siddhis outlined in the Vibhuti Pada (Book III) of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Clairaudience, or what some other people also call “psychic hearing,” can be characterized in many forms.
Some say that if you possess clairaudience, you can hear voices in your head and/or thoughts from sources beyond our world may suddenly appear in your mind. Others say that with clairaudience, you can communicate with beings from another realm. This type of siddhi, however, refers to the ability to understand the meaning behind all kinds of sounds whether these are created by human or non-human entities.
Sutra 17 of the Vibhuti Pada describes how a person can develop this siddhi.
“shabdartha pratyayamam itaretraradhyasat sankarah tat pravibhaga sanyamat sarvabhuta ruta jnanam”
"The sound, the meaning (behind it) and the idea (which is present in the mind at the time) are present together in a confused state. By performing Samyama (on the sound) they are resolved and there arises comprehension of the meaning of sounds uttered by any living being."
— I.K. Taimni, The Science Of Yoga
"Word, meaning, and perception tend to get lumped together, each confused with the others; focusing on the distinctions between them with perfect discipline yields insight into the language of all beings."
— Chip Hartranft, The Yoga-Sûtra of Patañjali
"The sound and the object and the thought called up by a word are confounded because they are all blurred together in the mind. By perfectly concentrated Meditation on the distinction between them, there comes an understanding of the sounds uttered by all beings."
— Charles Johnston, The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali: The Book of the Spiritual Man
The knowledge of the sounds/language of all beings can be attained by performing Samyama Meditation on the Throat Chakra. The throat chakra, also called vishuddha, is the energy center in the subtle body associated in the physical body with the area of the throat. Its corresponding corresponding sense-organ (indriya) is the ear and corresponding sensation (tanmatra) is hearing. The person who practices concentration and meditation on the elemental qualities of the throat chakra will be able to understand the workings of this psychic ability. Additional information are provided in the articles on extra sensory perception and mastery of the five senses.
